How to research a crypto asset before you put money into it

Ask most people how they researched their last crypto purchase and the honest answer is that they read what people who already owned it were saying. A thread on X, a YouTube video, a Telegram group where everyone was already positioned. That is not research. That is sampling the opinions of people whose financial interest depends on you agreeing with them.

Proper research is duller and considerably more useful. Here is what it actually involves, and where the newer AI tools help and where they do not.

Where the data lives

On-chain activity comes from block explorers and analytics platforms. Protocol revenue and total value locked come from DeFi data aggregators. Token supply schedules are usually in project documentation, though they are often buried, which tells you something in itself. Price and market capitalisation come from the major data providers. News and announcement history matters for understanding whether a team ships what it promises or announces what it hopes.

The Latest Trends in Crypto Trading for 2026

The problem is not access. It is that these live in separate places, in different formats, and answering one decent question means pulling from three of them and reconciling the results. That reconciliation work is why most people give up and go back to reading threads.

Where AI research tools fit

This is the specific gap that agentic research platforms target. QuantPilot, launched by 3Commas in 2026, built its crypto market research product around it, and the design is worth understanding because it clarifies what these tools do and do not solve.

Rather than being a chatbot that answers from memory, the platform uses agents that query live data sources and do actual analysis. They connect to CoinMarketCap for price and coin information, DefiLlama for DeFi metrics, CryptoQuant for on-chain data, a news API for current and historical coverage, and a web search tool. The agents can plan a task, write and run code, build charts and work with files.

The practical effect is that a question spanning several sources becomes answerable by someone who cannot write code. Whether a protocol’s revenue tracked its token price over two years is exactly the sort of question that used to require either technical skill or the willingness to spend an evening with spreadsheets.

There is also a scheduling function that runs defined research tasks on a recurring basis and reports findings, which suits anyone who wants to monitor holdings without checking prices compulsively. Anyone following crypto market developments will recognise that the tooling available to individuals has improved considerably faster than most people’s research habits have.

Access is metered by usage at a dollar per million tokens of computation, with free registration and an optional five-thousand-dollar lifetime badge aimed at heavier users.

Red flags that research reliably surfaces

A few patterns turn up often enough to be worth checking for directly, and all of them are findable with the sources above.

A large share of supply held by a small number of wallets. Concentrated holdings mean a handful of people can move the price at will, and you will not be told before they do.

Total value locked that rises and falls exactly with the token price. That usually means the deposits are chasing token rewards rather than using the protocol, and they will leave when the rewards stop.

Announcements that consistently outpace releases. Compare a project’s communications from a year ago against what actually shipped. Teams that habitually announce partnerships which never materialise tend to keep doing it.

Revenue that does not exist. Plenty of projects with substantial valuations generate no fees at all. That is not automatically disqualifying for early-stage infrastructure, but it should be a conscious decision rather than something you discover afterwards.

None of these are exotic. They are the sort of checks that separate a considered position from a hopeful one, and they apply as much to longer-term investing decisions as to anything speculative.

Setting expectations honestly

A note that sits awkwardly on a site about growing wealth, but belongs here.

Better research improves your decisions. It does not make crypto a reliable way to build wealth, and the majority of retail participants in speculative markets lose money regardless of how well informed they are. Research reduces the chance of avoidable mistakes, meaning the unlock you did not check or the yield you misunderstood. It does not convert a volatile asset class into a dependable one.

If crypto forms part of your finances, the position it occupies matters more than the quality of your analysis of any single asset. Money you cannot afford to lose does not belong here, however thorough the research behind it.

A workable routine

For anyone wanting something concrete, this is a reasonable standard.

Before buying anything, answer the four questions above in writing. Note the unlock schedule and the date. Write down what would falsify your thesis. Record the price you paid and why.

Then revisit quarterly and check the thesis against what actually happened, not against the price. A position that rose for reasons unrelated to your reasoning is not a validated thesis. It is luck, and confusing the two is how a good process quietly degrades into an expensive one.

Whether you do this manually or with an agent doing the data work is a question of convenience. The discipline is the part that matters, and no tool supplies it.

One last thing. If this routine feels like too much effort for the position you were planning to take, that is useful information rather than a reason to skip the routine. Positions too small to justify an hour of research are usually too small to matter, and positions large enough to matter deserve considerably more than an hour.
